Jayavarman VII
Jayavarman VII was born in 1125 and died in 1218 at the age of 92-93. He ruled the kingdom from 1181-1218. Some scholars think that Jayavarman suffered from the disease of leprosy. He was one of the most productive kings because he expanded the empire to its greatest point. He built many temples (one being Angkor Thom), highways, houses and hospitals. Jayarvarman VII and his military campaigns defeated the Chams and freed his people from slavery and helped them regain their independence. Jayarvarman VII made Mahayana Buddhism the state’s main religion and began a large program of temple building.
He rebuilt the city of Angkor which is now called Angkor Thom. He also rebuilt and stretched highways that lead to far provinces. He built over 100 rest houses along these long highways and built over 100 hospitals which he distributed around his kingdom and placed the protection of Baiṣajyaguru Vaiḍūryaprabhā. Baiṣajyaguru Vaiḍūryaprabhā was the Great Buddha of Healing.
